I received an email from a new friend in Germany on my Xing Professional social network wishing me a Happy birthday and asking "Can there be a better day than Valentine's Day
for a birthday?". I felt compelled to share with her my childhood birthday celebration story. and upon further thought, publish it on my website. Possibly , it'll bring some additional smiles.
Here is my response to her kind email verbatium:
"When I was a kid growing up, my mother used to celebrate my birthday with my brothers on Feb 13th on the same day every year. My youngest brother Bills birthday was on Jan 9th, the middle brother Marc is on Mar 13th. I guess my mother thought if we would celebrate all the birthdays together then it should be done on a day that is no-ones actual birthday and she decided on Feb 13th.
When I was 16 working on 17, I enlisted in the Marine corps with parental consent. At the time I took my exams and had to submit my birth certificate, I learned my birthday wasn't on the 13th as I thought all those shared birthdays growing up, but rather the 14th. I remember coming home from the Federal building where I took my oath of office saying to my mother "Do you know how many girlfriends I could have had in school, if I knew my birthday was on Valentines day!".
I can't help but think of that every year, so Valentines day certainly has become special for me. I also celebrate my anniversary on Valentines day with my second wife. This year was our 10th.
Thanks again and I hope my childhood birthday celebration story brings you a Valentines weekend smile"
